Washington Hall Renovation

Washington Hall has consistently functioned as a performance space since its construction in 1908 but had fallen into disrepair in the last few decades and was in danger of demolition before Historic Seattle acquired the building in June of 2009. Our approach to renovating Washington Hall is to retain existing historic fabric and features; repair where needed; and replace in-kind if needed. The restoration of Washington Hall is a $9.9 million project, which is being implemented in four phases:

Phase I – $2.5 million raised for property acquisition and stabilization…this phase has been achieved – COMPLETE!

Phase II – $840,000 raised for urgently needed roof replacement and rebuild of damaged south wall – COMPLETE!

Phase III – $5.6 million raised for seismic retrofit, elevator, sprinklers, performance and operating space – COMPLETE!

Phase IV – $986,000 secured to restore historic windows and main facade, and to complete interior build-out including affordable tenant offices, meeting space, and recording studio - COMPLETED IN MAY 2016!

With the full funding of this project and the completion of restoration work, Washington Hall reopened to the public in the summer of 2016.

Following the reopening, Historic Seattle will – through philanthropic contributions – continue to make improvements to Washington Hall, ensuring its operation as a comfortable, accommodating gathering space for all.
